A Note from the Author

I wrote this book because I kept meeting people who were living the same question I was living: not what do I want, but who am I, beneath all of it.

I have spent most of my life moving. Between countries and cultures, between languages and identities, between the version of myself that others needed and the version I was still trying to find. For a long time I believed that movement was the problem. That if I could only settle somewhere, in a place or a career or a version of myself, the restlessness would stop.

It did not stop. But writing this book helped me understand why. We do not finish becoming. The process is not a phase of life. It is the texture of life itself. And the moment we think we have arrived, we are probably most lost.

Success, I found, did not answer the questions I had about identity. It accelerated them. Building something visible to the world while remaining invisible to yourself is a particular kind of loneliness. This book is an attempt to write honestly about that experience, for anyone who has shared it.

His work explores identity, belonging, cultural inheritance, and the experience of living between worlds. Having lived and worked across multiple countries and cultures, he writes about the questions that emerge when home, language, and self are never confined to a single place. Still Becoming is his first book. He writes in both English and French.

Tarak Lucas Bach Hamba was born in France into a family shaped by multiple cultures, languages, and histories. With a Tunisian father and a French mother, questions of identity and belonging emerged early and remained a constant thread throughout his life.

Growing up between different cultural influences led him to explore what it means to belong, how identity evolves over time, and how people make sense of themselves when they live between worlds rather than fully inside a single one.

Over the years, he has lived, worked, and spoken internationally, gaining exposure to different cultures, perspectives, and ways of understanding success, community, ambition, and selfhood. Those experiences deepened his interest in the questions that would eventually become the foundation of his writing.

Throughout that journey, he continued writing privately, filling journals and notebooks with reflections on identity, migration, memory, belonging, and personal transformation. Over time, those fragments evolved into a larger question: how do we understand ourselves when our lives span multiple places, languages, and versions of who we have been?

That question became the foundation of Still Becoming, a memoir exploring the lifelong process of becoming who we are. Written in both English and French, the project reflects not only a bilingual practice but also the experience of navigating life across cultural boundaries.

Still Becoming is his first book and represents the culmination of years of reflection, writing, and exploration into the spaces between identity, belonging, and reinvention.
